Loneliness plays a major roll in "Of Mice and Men" for the charetors Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife.
Candy:
He lost his right hand in a farm accident. Now he has the meanest job on the ranch, he is the swamper. He shows us what happen to an old man beset by physical disability, loneliness and rejection. His reaction when his dog gets killed shows us that he is a human being with human feelings. "I'd make a will an' leave my share to you guys in case I kick off, 'cause I ain't got no relatives nor nothing. You guys got any money? Maybe we could do her right now?"
Crooks:
He is a proud man. He is a cripple and a Negro. He has black wrinkles and thin, pain - tightened lips. He is an illustration of the way in which loneliness can corrupt and destroy a man. Sometimes he is bullied by the other ranch hands. "Books ain't no good. A guy needs somebody to be near himÂ… A guy goes nuts if ain't got nobody"
Curley's wife:
