School Funding

Do first graders learn better in a class of 15 students than in a class of 25? Is learning hurt in a seventh grade classroom where a chronically disruptive student is forced to remain because the school cannot afford to provide kids like him with the intensive educational and psychological services they need? Do high school students who are struggling to pass the ISTEP test benefit from in school, after school, and summer school programs designed to improve their academic weaknesses?
The answer to all of these questions is "yes." However, local communities are held back by the limited incomes of their residents and cannot fund quality education programs on their own. The state must play an even bigger role in school funding.
Since 1993, the state has been providing more funds to public education than before, but the job is only half done. Our community still does not have the resources we need to help all students reach their academic potential. The state's commitment to......
