Ist musikalisches Talent erbbar? Dieser Frage versuchte der Wissenschaftler Johann Gottfried Walter seiner Zeit auf den Grund zu kommen. Er untersuchte den Stammbaum der Familie Bach. Angefangen bei Veit Bach, der noch Bäcker in Ungern war, und unter dessen Nachkommen fast 70 Berufsmusiker waren, was somit hieß, dass die Bachs in hohem Grad das Musikleben des mittelfränkischen Gebietes bestimmten. Walter hatte die Theorie, dass es wohl am Namen selbst liegen müsse, denn wenn man die Töne B-A-C-H spielt, klingt der Name allein in sich schon melodisch.
