This report will look at each association and organisation in turn and assess their relevance to an artist/writer running their own record label. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) was formally incorporated in 1973 when initially its aims were to combat the growing problem of music piracy. Since then, the BPI has represented the views and concerns of British record companies not just in music piracy, but in aspects of the music industry such as Rights negotiations, promotion of the industry, and research and publication of key statistics.
