Jim Crow Alabama
Jin Crow laws were laws that imposed racial segregation. They existed in the South and originated from the black codes that were imposed from 1865 to 1866 and from prewar segregation on the railroad cars in the northern cities. The laws sprouted up in the late nineteenth century after the Reconstruction and lasted until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. The Supreme Court set the stage for Jim Crow laws by several of its decisions. The Court concluded that the Civil Rights Act of 1875 was unconstitutional and ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment did not prohibit individuals and private organizations for discriminating on the basis of race. One of the southern states that the Jim Crow laws had the most impact on was Alabama. The Jim Crow laws of Alabama can be broken down into many different classifications.
