She got the surgery and ended up with only a tiny stump. She had a lot of visitors.

There were tons of people interviewing her in the hospital. She couldn't go home because people camped out on her lawn waiting to interview her. People were giving her flowers, balloons, and letters.

The first time she got back on the surf it was really hard for her to get up because of using only one arm. She tried really hard and got up a few times on the first day. Every time she got up it got easier the next time. She had to work harder and harder each day to get good enough to get back into competitions. They had an auction to raise money for her from her sponsors and her brothers' sponsors to raise money for her because she didn't have a lot of money in her family. They raised lots of money in the auction.

She started going in competitions with one arm. She did well in all of them. Then she got enough money for a fake arm. It hung in her room. She would get this thing called phantom......
