Hemingway arbeitet mit knappsten Mitteln. Er überläßt viel dem Leser, aber Ich meine nicht, daß dadurch der Leser freie Hand in der Interpretation hat; nein, Hemingway zwingt ihn "nur" zum genauen Lesen. Inhalt
Der Amerikaner und das Mädchen Jig irgendwo am Ebro, im Cafe eines kleinen Bahnhof. Sie reden über Belangloses. Der Amerikaner flechtet ein, daß die Operation (die mit dem Mädchen geplant ist) einfach sei. Es herrscht eine lakonische, lethargische Stimmung: "That's the way with everything"; "That's all we do, isn't it—look at things and try new drinks?" Fast unmerklich schleicht sich des öfteren Dissens ein: "Just because ... doesn't prove anything"; "Oh, cut it out." Schließlich kommt der Zug und das Mädchen versichert zweimal "I feel fine." Stil
