The Glass Ceiling Should be Eliminated
The term "glass ceiling" appeared for the first time in a Wall Street Journal report on corporate women written by Hymowitz and Schellhardt. Primarily, the glass ceiling referred to barriers encountered by women in advancing to senior management positions. Relatively soon, the term expanded its meaning and nowadays it is also related to minorities, men and women, who are not promoted or fairly compensated because of their race.
Thousands of articles have been written since the concept of glass ceiling entered the business vocabulary, and many organizations made efforts to eliminate or to decrease the glass ceiling effect. Although there is an amelioration of the problem, significant improvements have not been noticed yet.
Purposes of the Study
The purposes of this study are to (1) examine why the glass ceiling should be eliminated and (2) recommend ways to remove it.
