The Need for Control
In December of 1995, a thirteen-year-old boy named Joey was shot by his fifteen-year-old friend when they found a pistol that they thought was unloaded. In January 1996, two-year-old Kaile was shot in the chest by her three-year-old brother who found a loaded handgun in a drawer in his parent's room. Fifty-four percent of Americans who died from gunshot wounds in 1997, died by suicide. In that same year, 247 Americans, aged one to seventeen, died from unintentional shootings, while 679 children died from firearm suicides. Firearms are getting out of control in America. They are killing innocent children and causing violence among the youth of our country. Suicide rates are increasing tremendously across the country, especially among youth. America has always been considered a gun culture, from the start of time. Even though guns are a part of American culture, controlling firearms distribution and use is essential to reducing the high number of youth......
