The people of Oceania were devoted to the party. No one would ever think to question the party. Yet on the other hand, some people did not fully believe in what the party was telling them. In fact, most people were experiencing "doublethink". Doublethink is when you actually believe in two contradictory ideas. People of the part believed in war with Eurasia, but when they thought about it, they did not believe in anything they were being told. Winston was arrested for doing exactly this. In his brain he believed in the resistance against Oceania. After work and during his time with Julia he began to realize there is no war. Winston was arrested as a thought criminal. "It occurred to Winston that for the first time in his life he was looking, with knowledge, at a member of the Thought Police." (Orwell 224).
