Née, pratiquement, dès la parution de la première aventure de Sherlock Holmes, l'holmésologie s'est pratiquée de façon individuelle jusqu'en 1934, année où l'américain Christopher Morley (1890-1957), homme de littérature aux multiples visages et membre de l'Algonquin Round Table (club littéraire qui se réunissait à l'hôtel new-yorkais L'Algonquin), créa un nouveau dining club. Rassembler un groupe d'amis pour un repas où la conversation allait bon train, dans le cadre d'un club ou d'une société était le passe-temps de Christopher Morley. Comme Ronald Knox, lui et ses frères étaient depuis toujours fascinés par Sherlock Holmes.
