Our text (John chapter 9) starts with Jesus seeing a man who was blind from birth. The first question his disciples asked was, "Â…who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind?" This physical disability was considered as a form of punishment for the sins committed. So the disciples thought this man's blindness was the result of a punishment for his or his parent's sin. But we see Jesus immediately addressing this misconception by stating in John chapter 9 verse 3, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life." Thus, Jesus declares the purpose of the situation.
